Although the coloring of the Berndt's moray is dark brown on pale cream/gray for camouflage, I chose bright, secondary colors to portray the vibrancy of Hawai'i, where he lives in deep waters. This eel's designs make for a wonderful composition of interesting shapes similar to petroglyphs...

The Berndt's moray lives in the deep waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, where its dark brown and pale gray coloring allows it to easily blend into the coral reefs.

In this painting, I chose brighter secondary colors to reflect the vibrancy of Hawai'i. The eel's distinctive markings create a composition of rhythmic shapes that echo the visual language of ancient petroglyphs.
